Metropolitan Round 14: Olimpia beat Miramar by three after a very close game

Fifteenth-ranked Miramar (2-8) used its home court advantage to challenge second ranked Olimpia (8-3) in Montevideo on Wednesday. The visitors managed to secure only three-point victory 80-77. However their fans expected much easier game. American forward Al Thornton (203-1983, college: FSU, agency: BIG) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Santiago Fernandez (186-2000) contributed with 20 points and 5 assists for the winners. Ivan Loriente (190-1992, agency: Pro Sports) replied with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for Miramar. Olimpia have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 8-3 record behind leader Urunday, which they share with Tabare. Miramar lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the fifteenth place with eight games lost. Olimpia is looking forward to face Colon (#12) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Miramar will play against Colon and is hoping to prove to their fans that they can break losing series.
Important game to mention about took place in Montevideo. Seventh ranked U.Atletica (6-5) saved a 3-point derby victory at home edging 8th ranked Welcome (5-6) 95-92 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Welcome. Point guard Felipe Garcia (173-1999) scored 28 points to lead the charge for the winners and Andres Dotti chipped in 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. point guard Santiago Wohlwend (172-1997) responded with 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. U.Atletica moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Atenas and Sayago. Welcome at the other side dropped to the ninth position with six games lost. They share it with Stockolmo and O.Mundial. U.Atletica's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Montevideo to the arena Stockolmo.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Larranaga (7-4) against twelfth ranked Stockolmo (5-6) on Thursday night. Visiting Larranaga was defeated by Stockolmo in a tough game in Montevideo 72-77. Facundo Terra notched a double-double by scoring 18 points, 6 rebounds and 12 assists to lead the effort. Even 23 points and 8 rebounds by DJ Foreman did not help to save the game for Larranaga. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Stockolmo moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Welcome and O.Mundial. Loser Larranaga dropped to the fourth position with four games lost. Stockolmo's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Montevideo U.Atletica.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 14: Sayago was beaten by 25 de Agosto on the road 66-52. Colon lost to Atenas on its own court 82-93. Bottom-ranked Lagomar was outscored by O.Mundial in Montevideo 75-97. Miramar recorded a loss to Urunday at home 67-83. Olimpia was defeated by Tabare on the opponent's court 79-62.
The most impressive performance of 14th round was 14 points and 10 rebounds by Prince Orizu of Tabare.
