2010 Centrobasket, Semifinals: DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - CUBA 85-71

Dominican Republic stays unbeaten in Santo Domingo. This time Dominicans outplayed Cuba 85-71 advancing to Centrobasket Finals, where they will take on Puerto Rico. On the other side, Cuba will fight against Panama for third place. Franklin Western (200-F-72, college: Providence) led the way for Dominicans with 16 points. Kelvin Pena (193-G-81, college: Southeastern CC) had 14 points and 6 assists, while Elpidio Fortuna (186-G-85) added 13 points and 5 assists. Elys Guzman (206-F/C-82, college: Bemidji St.) had double-double of 10 points and 11 boards. In the loosing squad, Yoan Luis Haiti (200-C-82) collected 14 points and 5 rebounds. Lisvan Valdez (194-G/F-88) scored 13 pts.
Third quarter was the crucial one in this game. Before that, Dominican Republic made two-point lead in the first half (17-12 Q1, 22-22 Q2). After the breather Dominican totally took control on their rivals. They exploded at the both sides of the court scoring 29 points in offense and at the same time limiting Cuba to just 10 points for 10 minutes. It means that Dominicans were up by 21 with one quarter to go. Cuba won the last ten minutes 17-24, but they needed a way more.
Dominicans will meet powerful Puerto Rico in the Big Final, while Cuba and Panama will play few hours before that game. Both matches are scheduled for Monday.

Former international Swingman Andy Boffil (190-G/F-82) put on an amazing game in the last round for top-ranked Villa Clara, receiving a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 7. The 34-year old player was the main contributor (35 points) to his team's victory, helping them to beat Matanzas (#5, 3-4) 98-85. It allowed Villa Clara to consolidate first place in the Cuban LSB. LSB Round 7: No surprise as #1 Villa Clara defeat Guerreros - 4 days ago
LSB top team - Villa Clara (7-0) managed to deliver another win on Thursday. This time they beat sixth ranked Guerreros (3-4) in Santa Clara 98-85. The game was mostly controlled by Villa Clara. Guerreros managed to win second period 26-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Villa Clara shot 63.6 percent from the field. 29-year old forward Esteban Martinez (192-F-87) had an amazing evening in the last round for Santiago and receives a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 6. He had the game-high 55 points adding six rebounds and three assists for Santiago in his team's victory, helping them to beat Guantanamo (#8, 0-6), the league's bottom-ranked team 96-84.
