The Disciplinary Committee of the Belmopan Basketball Association (BBA) met on Monday, October 17th, 2011 to review and discuss the incidents in which players from the Travelers Bad Boys team were involved. Mark Wagner was charged with referee assault, Ty Bradley (183-G-85) with use of offensive language and putting referees in fear of impeding violence and Stephen Williams (188-G-83) with offensive language and unsportsmanlike conduct under the Disciplinary Tribunal Procedure bylaws Part 4, per Belize Basketball Federation (BBF) Policy 16.3. The BBA tournament is sanctioned by the BBF and therefore follows the BBF rules. Assaulting a referee is a serious offence, as stipulated by the bylaws, and the penalty for such an offence has a maximum penalty of life ban from any further participation in any official basketball tournament sanctioned by the BBF. These were the final rulings of the committee:
1. The three players were found guilty of the charged offences. 2. Mark Wagner was penalized 5 years suspension with community service as of October 17th, 2011. If he fulfills his community service by officiating at least 10 senior games per year for 4 years, the penalty will be lowered to 4 years suspension. If he declines to become involved in any service, then the penalty will be a 6-year suspension. 3. Ty Bradley (183-G-85) was sanctioned with 6 months suspension as of October 17th, 2011. 4. Stephen Williams (188-G-83) was sanctioned with 5 months suspension as of October 17th, 2011. 5. The three players need to send formal letters of apology to the referees. The BBF takes matters of misconduct by players, coaches and officials very seriously. In an effort to make basketball a family oriented sport, the BBF will enforce the regulations against misconduct and violence.
