According to information received from Mr. Marlon 'Kobe' Hernandez, President of Liga Metro, the final tournament of the year will start next week with the participation of Sat-Chiquimula, most of the teams from the previous Torneo de Apertura, and possibly a few others that will compete by invitation for the first time. Among the invited teams to participate in Torneo Oficial 2009, we find several clubs from Liga Premier of the National Basketball Federation: Escuintla, Santa Lucia and El Progreso. But it is also known that an invitation for Colegio Preparatoria, filled with sub-19 players that currently belong to the national teams of Guatemala, has been extended by the authorities of Liga Metro. So new rivalries will be created as Liga Metro starts after a long middle-year recess. Games will be held mainly at Gimnasio Teodoro Palacios Flores, but it is reported that Gimnasio UP has not been completely discarded for future use by Liga Metro -as previously informed in this website, a new league has been launched with three former teams of Liga Metro (D-Team, Lemans and Lanco Elite) and it is said that they have Gimnasio UP as their main court by contract. So only time will tell how both leagues will co-exist in the small marketplace of quality players in Guatemala.

At the losing side, Otto Rodriguez (192-F-88) was the main scorer for D-Team, with 25 pts, closely followed by Fernando Marroquin (180-G-81), with 24 pts. Fans at Gimnasio de la Universidad Popular, mainly from D-Team, were able to witness a close match from the start to the end, as even in the last minutes of regulation when Sat-Cybertech repeatedly took a comfortable lead towards the championship, D-Team countered with spectacular performances beyond the 3-pt line. Sadly, the game also highlighted an abnormal number of calls from referees (they were 53 free throws made for both teams!), showing that Liga Metro will need to review its guidelines for them in order not to affect the tempo and quality of the games. We congratulate Sat-Cybertech for the championship...Long live the King!
